Saturday, December 2nd – Bergheim Campground - 103 White Water Road, Boerne, TX 78006

This bonfire and campout on the Guadalupe River will be benefiting Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts of Burners Without Borders - Corpus Christi (BWBCC) (https://www.facebook.com/groups/662157823810955/). They are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, and 100% of money donated to them will go directly towards their Harvey recovery efforts in the Aransas Pass, Rockport, Ingleside, and Port Aransas areas. To see what they’ve been up to since Harvey made his uninvited visit, scroll down their FaceBook page and check out this video: https://youtu.be/b7nZo4WU8zk

Burners Without Borders (https://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/) is an international disaster relief organization. Their Mission: BWB promotes activities around the globe that support a community's inherent capacity to thrive by encouraging innovative approaches to disaster relief and grassroots initiatives that make a positive impact.

BWBCC volunteers have been working non-stop ever since Harvey slammed into the Texas coast on August 25th. They have a command center set up in Aransas Pass, and have been coordinating and feeding volunteers for various demolition and reconstruction projects. They have done several annual beach cleanups and other great things in the CC area for the last five years, and are committed to assisting with Harvey recovery efforts for the long haul. As of September 27th they have already logged almost 3,000 volunteer hours towards Harvey recovery projects.

When this bonfire happens, it will have been over 3 months since Harvey. Most people not in immediately affected areas will have largely forgotten about what those in devastated areas are going through, and donations will have slowed to a trickle. However, the recovery process for this disaster will take a long time. What they need most are volunteers to roll up their sleeves and work, as well as monetary donations. If you would like to volunteer, please contact them through their Facebook page.

The fee for this event is $20, and includes camping for anyone who would like to stay overnight. Please bring cash. Bergheim Campground (http://bergheimcampground.com/) is being very generous and providing the campground for free for this event, so all $20 will go to BWBCC. 100% of it will go towards Harvey recovery efforts. When you arrive, you do not need to go to the office. Pay and get your wristband at the registration table down at the bonfire site by the river. There will also be a donation box if you would like to contribute more.

If you would like to make an extra donation directly to BWBCC, you can do so via PayPal with the email address bwbcc0 at gmail dot com, or you can donate online via Burning Man Project at http://bit.ly/2fhrdjC.

We are also requesting that everyone bring at least one bundle of firewood. More is better. In addition to the bonfire, there will be several smaller fires for grilling, roasting marshmallows, and keeping warm away from the bonfire. Some of us will be gathering wood earlier that week. If you can help with this it would be very appreciated. If you would like to assist with this, send an email to dirknb at yahoo dot com. Our record is 11 truck and trailer loads of wood. We will need help if we want to rival that this time. Even if you can’t help, please let us know if you are aware of any available firewood in the area that we can pick up. No wood with nails please.

This event is BYO beverages and food. There will be some grills available for cooking, but feel free to bring one if you want because space on them can be tight. There will be some picnic tables, but it is recommended that you bring a camp chair.

Camping spots will be first-come, first-served. Feel free to arrive anytime that day. We’ll have a small fire burning starting around 2:00 PM (unless it’s a warm day), and will light the bonfire around sunset. It will not be just one giant pile of wood that is torched all at once, instead we will build it up throughout the evening. It will probably be at its peak around 9:00 or 10:00 PM, but will burn all night.

Please park in the lot across the street from Bergheim Campground. Parking space in the campground is limited. You can drive down to the bonfire area to unload wood, coolers, chairs, tents, etc., but please park across the street after you have unloaded. Carpool if you can.

Bergheim Campground has an RV park up near the office. If you would like to bring an RV, see their website for pricing. You will need to make a reservation if you plan on bringing an RV.

Some of us will be camping there on Friday night as well. You are welcome to come on Friday night, but their normal camping rates will apply. See their website for pricing. Pay at the office when you arrive.

Dogs allowed on a leash only. Clean up after them. If your dog does not get along with other dogs, please do not bring it.

If the weather is nice, there will be a group kayak trip led by A Good Paddling and Adventure (https://agoodpaddling.com/). If you would like to do the kayak trip, please arrive by 10:30 AM. The trip will be 3.8 miles from the campground to Edge Falls Rd. Bergheim Campground’s rental fee for single kayaks is $35 and for double kayaks it’s $60. This price includes shuttle. It’s a pretty easy stretch of river and suitable for beginners, although there are a couple of tricky spots. If you have your own kayak, see the Bergheim Campground website for launch and shuttle fees.

Keep your fingers crossed for good weather and no burn ban! :-)
