Due to Wednesday's flooding in New Braunfels the Comal will be closed this weekend. We will be doing the night tubing on the Upper Guadalupe. There was no flooding upstream of Canyon Lake, the current flow rate of this section is 261 cfs. Perfect for tubing. It will be on a 2 mile section of river between US 281 and FM 311 at Spring Branch. The new location is Guadalupe Canoe and Camping, located 1/4 mile north of the Guadalupe River bridge on US 281. This is NOT the outfitter that is right at the bridge. Turn into GCC 1/4 mile north of the bridge, where the highway goes back to two lanes, near the tall cell phone tower.
This stretch of river has 3 small rapids and will be an easy trip to do at night. This is an undeveloped stretch of river and there won't be a lot of city lights like on the Comal. We will have some battery powered lanterns rigged up and I'll have some extra headlamps. I'll also have plenty of glow necklaces but feel free to bring extra. If you have a headlamp or waterproof flashlight feel free to bring those too.
This trip is a little longer than the Comal would have been. It will take about 3 hours. As a result, the cookout time is now going to be from 5:30 to 7:30, and we will get on the river about 8:30 instead of 9:00. We will not be doing a day float.
This section of the Upper Guad is warmer than the Comal at 80 degrees compared to 72. Will be nice at night.
Since we will not be in New Braunfels, you can bring any size cooler on the river. Jello shots are allowed, but must be in a container larger than 5 ounces to take on the river. If they are in small cups like normal, they will need to be finished off before we start on the river. Remember, no styrofoam or glass. Tubes for coolers will be provided at no extra charge.
Because of the location change, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you wear good river shoes for this. Either wear sports-type sandals that strap to your feet around the heel or ankle, or sneakers. Flip-flops will be useless if you need to stand up in the river.
Because of the new location, camping will now be available. The charge for camping will be $8 per person. Pay for camping at the office, pay ACSA for your night tubing wristband.
Included in the price is tube rental, shuttle, and dinner. We'll be serving hamburgers and hot dogs, and have lots of chips and dips, veggie trays, etc. It also includes a keg of Dos XX. You are also welcome to bring anything to share if you'd like, but it's not necessary. It's BYOB on the adult beverages other than the keg. Remember, no glass or styrofoam is allowed on the river. You may want to bring a lawn chair for the cookout.
If you get cold easily, you might want to consider wearing some type of windbreaker. They are usually made of nylon and dry quickly. A cotton shirt will just hold water next to your skin and keep you cooler.
