Today we have an opportunity to hike with fellow hikers from the MeetUp Hiking Group in one of the places owned by The Nature Conservancy

In a region the Conservancy calls the Bandera Canyonlands in the western Hill Country, crystal-clear water flows from numerous springs and seeps originating from the geologic seam separating the porous Edwards limestone from the dense Upper Glen Rose formation. These perennial, life-giving waters etch through deep, cool canyons, enabling a wide variety of Texas native plants and wildlife to flourish on the Edwards Plateau.
Love Creek flows through the Conservancy’s preserve for 2 ¼ miles, giving it its name, then the creek joins with the West Prong of the Medina River, eventually contributing to the Edwards Aquifer. The preserve protects a representation of one of the most diverse habitats in the nation and some of the most scenic land in Texas.
This is NOT an easy hike! We will be climbing several steep slopes, each around 300’. If Enchanted Rock wears you out, this hike is not for you since we will be doing more hills than at Enchanted Rock.
We will be guided by one of the staff from The Nature Conservancy. and need to play by their rules today. Our trails through the Preserve can be decided when we get there. Be ready for a hike somewhere in the 5-10 mile range with steep slopes.
What to bring: The Nature Conservancy is asking each of us to make a contribution of $5 today. Wear good hiking shoes / boots. Bring plenty of water and your lunch. We will stop along the trail for a lunch break. There are no facilities at the Preserve.
Location: Love Creek Preserve is located across from the SAS Shoe Store property mid-way between Medina and Vanderpool on FM337. Parking is very limited, so we need to carpool as much as possible.
Carpool: Bass Pro Shop – 9:15 am Look for my silver Ford Ranger with an Adventure Club logo on it - I will be along the frontage road of I-10. We will leave promptly at 9:30. If you have a large car or SUV and can drive, please do so. If you get a ride with someone please pitch in gas $$$. |
