Come out this morning and join several other groups for a volunteer work day in the Headwaters Sanctuary.
The Headwaters Coalition is a non-profit, sponsored ministry of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, dedicated to preserving the Headwaters Sanctuary and spreading an ecological ethic.
The Coalition is protecting one of the last undeveloped forests in San Antonio, 53 acres adjoining the University of the Incarnate Word. Olmos Creek flows through the Headwaters Sanctuary. Within this urban wild space is San Antonio Spring, also known as the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole and Olmos Creek create the San Antonio River; they are the headwaters for which the Coalition and the Headwaters Sanctuary are named.
Our main goal today is to begin clearing the area around the “Little” Blue Hole in preparation for a trail that will eventually lead to this hidden feature. If we have enough folks some of us will work in other areas of the preserve and help eliminate non-native plants.
Tools, snacks, and water will be provided.
What to bring: Wear clothes that can get dirty and muddy: sturdy shoes, gloves, and gardening tools (pruners, lopers, saws, shovels). Water, snacks.
If you have a wheelbarrow or wagon and can bring it, that will help us carry tools into the preserve. If you have a chain saw we may use them today. That will depend on what work we do, and if Helen is comfortable with us using power tools this morning.
Where to park / meet: UIW is located at the SE corner of Hildebrand and 281. We will meet in the parking lot by the footbridge to the right of the Natatorium - #31 in the center of the map you can see if you click here.
